I would IRL struggle not to go straight for the charcuterie.

##toast the cold unfeeling parser and drink
What was the deal with the n,n,s,s grue-hallway? |
CirclMastr on Aug. 19, 2024, 12:28 a.m. | kaschei posted:##toast the cold unfeeling parser and drink If you've played any of the Wizardry games, you might be familiar with spinner traps. Basically, certain spaces you step on can invisibly spin you around to be facing a random direction, rather than your intended direction. At the midpoint of the hallway, a spinner trap spins you 180 degrees. The intention would be that you go north through the hallway and mysteriously end up back where you started, and you solve from there. Instead you literally did the exact sequence necessary to get to the north end of the hall entirely by accident, because I decided a dark hallway would be the best place to have a Zork reference in the description. There was never any actual grue and you were in no danger other than getting confused. |

All credit goes to him, and all mistakes or inaccuracies -- aside from the missing statue -- are entirely on me. Although I may have written the Inform version of the game, he fed me no information and didn't rely on anything I've done for his moderation, so even more credit to him. I've spent the past 3 hours fighting with Inform to make more useful files for the thread, without much success besides the link above. I've got work in 6 hours but after that I'll find a way to make it work. I'll part for now with an amusing note: The thread took 325 "turns" to solve the game, which doesn't count thinking about things and a few actions that didn't work. You can speedrun it in 73. |

The big thing I wanted to address was the dark hallway and how peeved I was that you all solved it on accident.
Some other random thoughts: I had no idea how to properly signpost that the lettering was for a later puzzle (which turned out to be the last puzzle by the time I did the layout of the UNDOT). I'm just glad you didn't immediately grab the translation guide as soon as you got to the study and wasted a bunch of turns translating things that had no use yet. I also had no idea how to signpost doing the west wing first without a literal signpost. I included the left-hand-rule reference but didn't think it would be enough, and sure enough, I needed a big sign saying "Go away until you solve more puzzles." The second key is impossible to get without the first. Failed puzzles zapping already-dead adventurers was an empty threat, since I couldn't kill anyone while Mafia was still happening. Once Mafia was done and people wanted to finish the game, though, killing the player character and forcing a restart would have killed any enthusiasm for the puzzles. So I reached for the Bureaucracy blood pressure levels as another empty threat (I was just going to have increasingly bad-sounding descriptions, "Incensed", "Apoplectic", etc.) As far as TwelveBaud's game product goes, I'm not sure where it should fall since some puzzles will require some trial and error (like the lever puzzle). The puzzles were adapted from Puzzles, Predicaments & Perplexities, which I got from Dungeon Masters Guild (I can't remember if it's free or if I bought it) for a D&D one-shot some years ago, and decided to just repurpose. Since it's statted for D&D, failed puzzle solves just resulted in damage rather than death, which I couldn't really do here. The one-shot I ran was a big joke about MTG's The One Ring card that they made a 1 of 1 exclusive version of. The party had to investigate the missing Wizard on the Coast, who had missed his latest delivery to the town toy store. When the party arrived at the toy factory (here the UNDOT), it was besieged by Sir Malone of the Post and his cult followers, who were desperate to get their hands on The One Thing that the wizard was crafting. Sure enough, Post Malone bought the actual 1 of 1 card, not that it was hard to predict that would happen. Even that one-shot didn't go as planned; I was going to have The One Thing be a clockwork wyvern that attacked the party as a final boss, but by the time they beat all the cultists and Sir Malone, a boss fight would have been a TPK. |
