1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "Oh hail the legion! Pity her foes / Her sword and her shield will be their new woes. / And when the sun sets, on this green and blue world / The Empire will stand, red banner unfurled." - excerpt from a popular Imperial drinking song.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "People think all us Seafolk are just a bunch of cutthroat mercenaries who will do whatever a heavy coinpurse tells us to do, but that's just not true. Whether you're Savomarine, Metzzi, Lierta, or even Ledolan, we all have values and beliefs that guide us from one place to the next. We Seafolk all believe that, if you gotta die somewhere far from home, it has to be for something you believe in." -- Anna Ricenza, Savomarine mercenary.

1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Arrentia is governed by an extensive and intricate legal code. Each new regent adds to the code but rarely remove sections from it, and foreigners often think it's more a sprawling labyrinth than a workable system of jurisprudence. Still, the rule of law and comprehensive notions of justice help to ensure all citizens are treated fairly and equally, at least most of the time.

1 year, 6 months ago Asiina added a comment: Deadline subject to change. An Imperial Legion typically consists of between 5,000 and 9,000 soldiers, depending on capacity vs. demand. Each legion is divided into ten cohorts, and each cohort typically has six centuries within it. The standard legion battle formation is three "Heavy" centuries in the front, with a "Specialist" century in the rear-center (typically Clerics or Mages), flanked by "Light" centuries on each side. There are over twenty legions scattered throughout the Empire. The strongest legion is the Praetorienne Guard, which typically acts as the personal bodyguard to the Empress herself.

1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Steel from the Jaharod has a vague greenish tint to it; expert blacksmiths can even make their swords glow dimly in the dark.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "The Battle of the Hillsbog was a massive defeat for the legion as they were overwhelmed from within and without. Jocasta had hoped to rely on the rough terrain and swamps to give her a defensive advantage, but she vastly underestimated Qal's tactical skill. Though her legionary detachment outnumbered the attackers significantly, the Horde still massacred them by dividing the front rank and then surrounding it, crushing it on all sides like a pea. Today the battle is considered one of the Empire's worst defeats, and introduced the expression 'stuck in the Hillsbog' to refer to hostile but intractable situations as a result of one's own arrogance." -- Ariadne meg-Tullain, Professor Emeritus, Imperial Military History, the University of Ravenwood.

1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Bishadher tribes on and near the bogs usually bury their corpses in peat, letting them mummify.
1 year, 6 months ago Rascyc was lynched on day 5!
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Ecco got few hours of sleep last night and is too tired for a proper lorebit. But here's a bit of lore: coincidentally the only thing in common between all the Imperial factions (and in contrast to all the Horde factions) is that they do not have a taboo against eating horses. But they refuse to touch dog meat, again in contrast to the Horde.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "Here's an idea for a story. Are you ready for it? A world that's just like ours, but, where nobody can do magicka. It just doesn't exist! They have to heal people with poultices and potions, they can only see at night with special torch goggles, and they need huge metal barrels to direct spouts of fire in battle. I know it's a strange concept, but I think imaging such a radically different world could provide the restraints needed for true creative enlightenment." - Angelika Paern, author.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Upper Charnaz, far from the Morze, is a harsh and inhospitable desert. This is especially true for the Jad'pu Wasteland, an expanse of glass and obsidian that stretches farther than anyone has dared to explore. Local legend is that three volcanoes erupted at the same time, releasing three fiery dragons into the sky. The dragons dueled over the lava flows, and when the battle cleared, the wasteland was all that was left.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Charnal dead are cremated, which is difficult considering their resiliency to heat and fire, but still possible with just the right kind of magicks.

1 year, 6 months ago Day 5 has begun!
1 year, 6 months ago King Burgundy was lynched on day 4!
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: How the dead in Mereaux are handled changes depending on the region. In the north, it's customary to be buried at sea, dumping the body off a boat half a mile from shore. In the south, because the oceans are further away, the dead are either buried near lakes and streams, or floated on rafts down particularly robust waterways. The custom of burying in larger lakes with stones is considered primitive and unsanitary.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Kermish poetry is rigid and formulaic. For instance, all poems must begin with a benediction to the Matriarchate, and end with a prayer to Wisdom. The matriarchs have imposed strict guidelines over what poems are acceptable, and reciting unapproved poems leaves the speaker liable for charges of lewdness or indecency.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "A cleric can heal a wound or set a broken bone, but only Wisdom can clear the mind of misery and terror." - Mereaux proverb.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Arrentish government is based on centralized Imperial authority from the Queen and maintained by both an idealistic commitment to the rule of law, and an elaborate and robust bureaucracy that grows ever more massive as the Empire expands further and further from Dromay. Citizenship to the Empire grants a whole host of rights and obligations, such as freedom of movement, the right to own property, and the right to due process.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Traditional Mereaux society was strictly feudal, but also valued intellect and talent. Male nobility were trained in the finest academies the world, in subjects ranging from history to magickal theory to natural philosophy to manorial economics. Common-born and peasant men were often granted noble status through natural aptitude or through loyal service to their liege lord, while the nobility could, on rare occasions, be stripped of their land and titles for incompetence or foolishness. This system was dismantled by Queen Krelo, and replaced with an Arrentish model.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "The Arrentish don't do espionage. It interferes with their sense of 'honor' and 'fair play.' They spy on you, sure, but from a distance, with far-seeing eyes; they won't dare get close. Not like the Nemchek. They practically live in the shadows, so 'course they'd be down for a little skullduggery." -- Feghan meg-Mully, Bishadher tactician.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: After a particularly critical satire was performed in Dromay, Queen Ebgenia the Bold closed many theaters and created a committee of censors that were empowered to approve all theatrical productions throughout the Empire. This unwieldy bureaucracy was dismantled by "The Queen of Smiles," and today the arts flourish throughout the Empire.
1 year, 6 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Arrentish music traditionally involved chanting and making loud resonance noises with your throat in a chorus, but with the expansion of the Empire, most people now regularly listen to an eclectic mix of Mereaux barrel organs, Kermish brass ensembles, Bishadher ballads, and even occasionally a lone Livireen guitarist busking sadly on a street corner.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Both the Arrentish and the Nemchek view death as a natural stage of life, and it should not be feared. But while the Arrentish believe in an afterlife with their ancestors, the Nemchek believe death is the end of existence - and that it's a gift from the gods to be cherished.
1 year, 7 months ago A deadline has been set for Monday, January 25 at 10:00 PM EST.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Nemchek believe the stars are actually holes ripped in the firmament by the gods, and through which the darkest magicks leak.
1 year, 7 months ago Day 4 has begun!
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "Only love may clean the scoundrel. / Only love may free my people. / It travels up the rotting tree, / Winding and crawling, Like ivy, / And it binds from branch to branch, / From leaf to leaf, / Until it flowers and blooms, / Dispelling all misery and gloom. "Love is the answer. Love is the question. Love is the key to our very salvation." -- except from "The Breath of Ivy," by Aldonza Jara, Livireen singer and revolutionary.
1 year, 7 months ago Tommunist was lynched on day 3!
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "Why did Queen Krelo send her eldest daughter and heir into the forests of Nemchy with only one distrustful legion to protect her? What a dumb question. Look, Krelo may be 'the Just,' but can you imagine Jocasta on the throne? They'd call her 'the Brute' or 'the Terrible' or 'the World-ender' in her first weeks. It's better for the whole Empire if she just wasn't able to assume the throne, if you catch my drift." - Julian, Mereaux bartender.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Forty years ago, the four Kermish matriarchs declared anathemas against each other over perceived heresies and personal squabbles. Queen Krelo of Arrentia managed to heal the divisions, and with her purchase of the Republics of Rubirge and Rossetia, she united the Kermish domains for the first time in generations.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Matriarchate established itself over a thousand years ago when a vision of Wisdom appeared before the reigning Kyria, Helena the Pious. Based in the Kermish city of Rubirge, the four matriarchs rule over the land with divine fiat.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Livireen has two major regions: the mineral-rich highlands of the Jaharod, home to miners and blacksmiths and the occasional merchant; and the fertile lowlands of the Alcazars, where the River Kings rule. Water in the Jaharod is hard to find, and so, millennia ago, grand aqueducts were built to bring water from the shores of the Morze into the most distant hills. And for the price of fealty to the River Kings, the water will continue to flow uninterrupted. But if there's even a whisper of revolution...
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "What even is 'traditional Arrentish cuisine' anymore? The Empire covers almost every coast of the Morze, and in any decent city you can find Livireen beef stew, Mereaux fried fish, Rentish wheatbread, even whatever backwash the Bishadhers call food. As Arrentia grows larger and larger, she becomes less of a concept and more of an ideal, and the kitchen reflects that." -- Alfonsa de Cereveux, Imperial cuisinier.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: All of Mereaux is divided into three parts: the first is the coastal plains of Mereaux proper (which includes the stony Gerzy islands, the largest of which being the island and town of Port Lourde); another the forests and hills of Vercy; and the third in Mereese is called "Genivère," but in the common tongue, The Juniper Hills.

1 year, 7 months ago Day 3 has begun!
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Lavender always grows near cemeteries in Arrentia. When it blooms, thus begins a season of holidays dedicated to honoring and remembering the fallen.
1 year, 7 months ago Ridonkulous was lynched on day 2!
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The burst of trading throughout the Morze has brought dozens of cultures together and intermingling, some for the first time. Enterprising merchants can even find explosive powders from the distant land of Pimonia, which can be used for magicks, chicanery, or even - potentially - warfare.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Jaharod custom of laying in the stables with ones horses has been outlawed for centuries by the River Kings after an outbreak of horse flu devastated the countryside.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "The difference between Arrentia and the Livireen is like night and day. Arrentia is a land of culture and sophistication, with tales of queens and noble conquest. The Livireen sleep with their horses." - Albertina Czalowski, Duchess of Portos
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "In the black woods of Nemchy, magick is just a little bit stronger. Scholars believe it's something about the trees, that their pollen lingers and ripples between worlds.
1 year, 7 months ago A deadline has been set for Friday, January 15 at 08:00 PM EST.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Arrentish poets often call battlefields "lavender wastes."
1 year, 7 months ago Day 2 has begun!
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Arrentish custom is to embalm the dead with perfumes of lavender.
1 year, 7 months ago Rarity was lynched on day 1!
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Traditional Arrentish cuisine is heavy on fish and vegetables and grains. Land meat is considered a sacred delicacy, reserved for priests and high holidays. But as the Empire expands and more cultures assemble in Dromay and along the Morze, cities have become far more cosmopolitan, and few can say what "traditional" cooking even is anymore.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Republic of Savomary is located on the shores of the Morze. Its region is also called the Turquoise Coast for its many lucrative turquoise mines (though its water is often a fresh teal from mineral runoff).
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Via Cerenia is old Arenian for "The Road of Peace." As the legions expand the borders of the Empire, roads go with them, bringing Arrentish civilization to even the most distant corners of the continent. The Via Cerenia is the most important one, and every nation in the Empire touches its sturdy cobbles.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Bishadher tribes that reside in the Hillsbog know exactly where to step to avoid the swamp's many perils: quicksand, tar, and of course the Webbed Crocodile. Other tribes know enough to at least travel through the swamp unscathed.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "The legions march and hunger for more / they will fear our mighty roar // We will feed our children their bones / as price for marching on our home." - Nemchek chant.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Queen Krelo's mother, Queen Zosia, was a drunk. She began hitting the bottle when her older sister, Queen Betia, was eaten by a wolf during a hunt. Zosia was called "the Queen of Smiles," but none can say whether she knew true peace, or if her joy was only because she had an empire's worth of wine within arms' reach.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: The Arrentish pantheon has three goddesses: Love, Death, and Wisdom. They believe Love and Death coupled and birthed Wisdom, who in turn birthed the trees and flora, who in turn birthed Man.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Kermish politics are divided into two classes: the merchants and the matriarchs. The matriarchs enforce canon law on the land, but leave trade and sea travel for the merchants. In response, the merchants built the city of Ledola - "The City on Stilts" - twenty miles from shore.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "Water is the blood of life. We worship the water not because we enjoy dancing in the rain, but because we love life itself. We are born in the waters of the womb, and it is only fitting we die in water as well." - Béatrice du Genévrier, Mereaux priest.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Arrentish males are considered too irrational and unemotional, and have few civil and economic rights. Military enlistment is one of their sole paths for citizenship, though many in the Empire wish to change that status quo.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: Thirty years ago the city of Gastro in the Livireen revolted against the River Kings' harsh taxation. Their aqueducts were shut off. By the third month, the city was a wasteland, gutted from the inside by desertion and cannibalism. There hasn't been a revolt since.
1 year, 7 months ago EccoRaven added a comment: "Many Bishadher bandit tribes - such as the Yelling Yeomen - fought bitterly against the Arrentish invasion. Many still resent the conquest today." - Georgia de Peche, Mereaux scholar.
