Succulent meat sizzled above campfires, and casks of tequila drained freely into waiting mugs and mouths. Amid it all, a few members of the army took it upon themselves to drunkenly sketch out strategic maps in the dust off to the side - to their eyes, it surely represented a masterwork of canny stratagems and deft maneuvers! The Villistas' victory was assured over the fat, failing, and flatulent Texans in their next engagement! But judging by the number of people who relieved themselves upon the drunken scrawling over the rest of the day, popular opinion sadly seemed to disagree.

He offered the distillery owners his favor as a pivotal figure in the Mexican revolution, and assurances of benefits to come after the corrupt government was overturned. They rejected his offer, called him a charlatan, and sent him packing with nothing to show for his efforts. Then, Pancho tried to buy them out. He offered them vast fortunes from the revolution, and a promise of more land to grow the crucial crops needed for brewing Shine. They turned him down, called him a filthy traitor, and chased him off with the dogs at his heels. Finally, Pancho returned with his army at his heels. He offered them the chance to cling to their miserable lives, and additional bonus pay if they would continue working to brew the Shine he craved. They reluctantly accepted, called him the new head honcho, and set to work brewing Shine for his cause.

2 weeks, 6 days ago Podima added a comment: When Shine surfaced in New York City during the height of Prohibition, people naturally compared it to the most similar thing they were already drinking - moonshine. (Naturally, that led to its naming.) But when Shine came to Mexico, people had a different comparison in mind... tequila. Whether it was an apt likeness or not, that mattered little to small distilleries eager to get out of the flooded (soaked?) tequila market and make something new. Thus, as Shine rose to prominence in Mexico, tequila began to decline. It was one such recently-converted distillery in Celaya, caught up in its new Shine creation and experimentation, that caught Pancho Villa's eye while out on an early morning ride and gave him the spark of an idea that would change the world forever...
3 weeks ago Podima added a comment: Many legends and tall tales followed Pancho (formerly Francisco) Villa through his storied career. A bandit turned revolutionary, he helped mobilize the downtrodden and shape them into a fighting force to be feared like no other. As time went on, those he worked with began to feel uneasy - was the División del Norte truly fighting for the Mexican revolution, or were they fighting for Pancho Villa only? It seems that their fears were warranted, as this new Shine-fuelled incursion into Texas seems to have little to do with the revolutionaries' goals for Mexican reform. But as for how the División del Norte became a fearsome army capable of challenging Texas, let alone the entire United States? That's a story for another time...
